What is UPI?

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a real-time payment system developed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) that enables instant bank-to-bank transfers through mobile devices. Launched in 2016, UPI has transformed digital payments in India by allowing users to send and receive money using a simple Virtual Payment Address (VPA) instead of sharing bank account details.

UPI works 24/7, including weekends and holidays, and supports instant transfers with zero transaction fees for individuals. It is interoperable across all banks and payment apps — meaning a Google Pay user can pay a PhonePe user seamlessly. As of 2024, UPI processes over 10 billion transactions monthly, making it the world's most adopted real-time payment system.
