The idea that a person has a specific animal spiritual guardian belongs to particular Indigenous North American religious systems, where it is embedded in ceremony, community and often a vision quest — not chosen from a list, and not self-assigned. Related but distinct concepts exist widely: the totem in anthropology usually denotes a clan emblem rather than a personal one; the nagual in Mesoamerican tradition; the fylgja in Norse sources; the vahana in Hinduism, which is a deity’s mount rather than a human’s companion. Conflating all of these under one borrowed English phrase flattens genuinely different systems, which is the substance of the objection — not merely a question of etiquette.
The Big Five model — openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism — is the personality framework with real scientific support, replicating across dozens of cultures and languages, and it reports where you fall on each dimension rather than assigning a type. It will not tell you that you are a wolf. It will tell you that you are at the 72nd percentile for openness, which is less fun and considerably more true. Both have their place: one is a party game, the other is measurement.
Many Indigenous North American people object to it, because it names a specific living religious concept embedded in ceremony and community rather than a personality label. Alternatives such as totem, patronus, or simply "which animal are you" carry the same playful meaning without borrowing from an active religious tradition.
In anthropological usage a totem is typically a clan or group emblem, inherited and shared, while the spirit-animal concept refers to a personal spiritual guardian within particular Indigenous North American traditions. They are related ideas from different systems, not synonyms.
Wisdom, auspiciousness and the removal of obstacles, chiefly through Ganesha. Elephants also carry associations of royal authority and memory, and appear throughout Indian temple architecture as guardians and as bearers of the world.
No, and they are not trying to be. They work through the Barnum effect — descriptions vague enough to fit nearly anyone feel personally precise — and every result is designed to be flattering. Enjoy the result and do not build anything on it.
The animal mount or vehicle of a deity — Ganesha’s mouse, Durga’s tiger, Vishnu’s Garuda, Saraswati’s swan. A vahana belongs to a god rather than to a person, so it is a different concept from a personal spirit animal, though the two are often conflated.
