About This IQ Test

Disclaimer: This is a fun, simplified intelligence estimate for entertainment purposes only. It is NOT a clinically validated IQ test. For an accurate assessment, consult a licensed psychologist. Real IQ tests are comprehensive, standardized, and individually administered.

How IQ scores are built, and what they do and do not predict

IQ is a relative score, not an absolute measurement. Every standardised test is calibrated so the population mean is 100 with a standard deviation of 15, which means your score is a statement about where you sit in a distribution — not a count of anything.

What a free online quiz can and cannot tell you

An online quiz is a pattern-recognition exercise, and it is genuinely fun. What it is not is a psychometric instrument. A real IQ score requires norms — a large, demographically representative standardisation sample — and no free web test has one. It also requires standardised conditions: timed, supervised, one attempt, no phone. Online tests are also uniformly generous, because a test that returns 96 does not get shared. Treat the number as entertainment and the puzzles as the point.

What IQ does predict

What it does not

The Flynn effect

Measured IQ rose by roughly 3 points per decade through most of the twentieth century across dozens of countries — documented by James Flynn. Because tests are periodically re-normed to keep the mean at 100, this is invisible unless you compare against old norms: a person scoring 100 today would have scored around 118 against 1950 norms. The gains were largest on abstract-reasoning subtests such as Raven’s and smallest on vocabulary and arithmetic, which points to schooling, cognitive complexity of daily life, nutrition and test familiarity rather than any change in underlying capacity. Since the 1990s the effect has stalled or reversed in several developed countries. Either way, it demonstrates that the score is not a fixed biological constant.

More questions people ask

What is a normal IQ score?

Scores between 90 and 109 are considered average and include about half the population. The distribution is deliberately centred on 100 with a standard deviation of 15, so 68 % of people fall between 85 and 115.

Is 130 a high IQ?

Yes — it is two standard deviations above the mean and puts you at roughly the 98th percentile. It is the common threshold for gifted programmes and for Mensa membership.

Are free online IQ tests accurate?

No. A valid score requires a large representative standardisation sample and supervised, timed, single-attempt conditions, none of which a web quiz has. Online tests also tend to score generously. Enjoy the puzzles and ignore the number.

Can you increase your IQ?

Measured scores respond to education, sleep, health, test familiarity and practice, and population-level scores rose about 3 points a decade for most of the twentieth century. Training on a specific task improves that task more than it improves general reasoning, so gains from brain-training apps rarely transfer.

What does IQ actually predict?

Academic achievement most strongly, at a correlation of roughly 0.5, and job performance at 0.3 to 0.5 with the link strengthening as jobs get more complex. It predicts creativity, emotional skill, motivation and integrity poorly, and those often matter more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real IQ test?
This is a fun estimate for entertainment. A real IQ test (like WAIS-IV) must be administered by a licensed psychologist and takes 1-2 hours.
What is the average IQ score?
The average IQ is 100. About 68% of people score between 85-115. Scores above 130 are considered gifted.
Can IQ change over time?
IQ scores can change, especially during childhood. Education, nutrition, and mental stimulation can influence cognitive abilities.
