getDisplayMedia API, but audio capture is the catch. MediaRecorder stays local until you upload it. Check whether the tool you are using uploads, because many do.Chrome and Edge can capture tab audio on all platforms and full system audio on Windows. Firefox and Safari cannot capture system or tab audio at all, so recordings made in them are video-only unless you add the microphone.
Usually WebM with VP9 video and Opus audio, which is the browser default. Safari and recent Chrome versions can also produce MP4 with H.264, which is far more compatible with video editors and social platforms.
Roughly 37 MB per minute at 1080p and 30 frames per second, or about 19 MB per minute at 720p. A recording of mostly static interface compresses much better — often nearer 10 MB per minute.
No. Mobile browsers do not implement getDisplayMedia for screen capture. Use the built-in screen recorder in iOS Control Centre or Android Quick Settings instead.
A recording built purely on MediaRecorder stays in the page until you choose to save or upload it. Many web-based recorders do upload to a server for processing, so check before recording anything sensitive.
