About Online Notepad

A clean, distraction-free text editor that runs entirely in your browser. Your notes are automatically saved to localStorage, so you never lose your work — even if you close the browser. Create multiple notes using tabs, format with bold, italic, lists, and headings, and download your notes when needed.

Browser-based notes: where the text actually lives

A browser notepad stores text in localStorage on your own device, not on a server — which means it survives a refresh and a reboot, but it is tied to that browser on that machine, and clearing site data deletes it permanently with no recovery.

Text encoding, and why files sometimes look wrong

Save notes as UTF-8. It represents every script — Devanagari, Tamil, emoji, accented Latin — and is the default almost everywhere on the web. The classic failure is opening a UTF-8 file in a tool that assumes a legacy Windows codepage, which turns a curly apostrophe into ’ and Hindi into rubbish. Excel is the notorious offender: it writes CSVs in the local codepage and expects a byte order mark on UTF-8 input. If you must interchange with Excel, save as UTF-8 with BOM.

A sensible habit for anything you care about

  1. Use the browser notepad for ephemeral things — a phone number, a paste buffer, a quick draft.
  2. Anything you would be upset to lose: export it to a file the same day. A plain .txt or .md file in a synced folder outlives every browser.
  3. If a tool offers export, use it before you accumulate a month of notes, not after.
  4. For notes that must be available on more than one device, a browser notepad is the wrong tool — there is no sync, by design.
  5. Never store passwords, tokens or card details in localStorage. It is readable by any script running on that origin.

More questions people ask

Where does a browser notepad save my notes?

In localStorage, which is part of your browser profile on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so the notes survive refreshes and reboots but exist only in that browser on that machine.

Will my notes be lost if I clear my browser cache?

Clearing the cache alone usually does not touch them, but clearing "cookies and site data" deletes them permanently with no recovery. Incognito windows discard everything when closed.

How much text can localStorage hold?

Between 5 and 10 MB per origin depending on the browser, which is roughly a million words of plain text — far more than notes require. Applications needing more use IndexedDB instead.

Can I access my browser notes on another device?

No. Storage is tied to one browser profile on one device, and there is no sync. Export to a file in a synced folder if you need the notes elsewhere.

Is it safe to store sensitive information in a browser notepad?

No. localStorage is readable by any JavaScript running on that origin and is stored unencrypted on disk. Never put passwords, API tokens or card details there.

Everything on this page runs in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my notes saved automatically?
Yes! Notes auto-save to your browser's localStorage every few seconds and persist across sessions.
Can I create multiple notes?
Yes, use the + button to create new note tabs. Each is saved separately.
Is there a word limit?
No practical limit. localStorage allows 5-10MB, enough for thousands of pages of text.
