Meme formats, dimensions and the copyright question

The classic meme look is Impact bold, white, uppercase, with a black outline — a convention that started because Impact ships with Windows and its heavy strokes stay legible over any photograph. The standard square social format is 1080×1080 px.

The copyright position, stated plainly

Most meme templates are stills from copyrighted films, television or photography, and the copyright belongs to whoever made the original. Memes nonetheless circulate freely because rights holders rarely enforce against non-commercial social sharing, and because transformative commentary and parody have some protection — fair use in the United States, and fair dealing under Section 52 of the Indian Copyright Act 1957, which is narrower and enumerates specific permitted purposes rather than applying a general balancing test.

The practical distinction that matters: personal and commentary use is low risk; commercial use is not. Putting a meme template on merchandise, in a paid advertisement or on a company landing page is straightforward infringement and does get enforced. Photographers in particular have pursued claims over meme use of their images. If you need a meme for commercial work, use your own photograph, a properly licensed stock image, or a CC0 source.

Making one that is not instantly forgettable

  1. Match the template to the emotion, not the other way round. Picking a template first and forcing a joke into it is why most branded memes fail.
  2. Be specific. A meme about "Mondays" lands nowhere; a meme about a specific shared frustration lands hard.
  3. Keep the format intact. Templates carry meaning — who is speaking, who is reacting. Breaking the convention reads as not getting the joke.
  4. Do not add a logo. It is the clearest signal that a brand made it, and it kills sharing.
  5. Check the template is still current. A format that peaked three years ago reads as dated.

More questions people ask

What font is used in memes?

Impact — bold, uppercase, white with a black outline. It became the convention because Impact ships with Windows and its very heavy strokes stay legible over any photograph.

What size should a meme image be?

1080 by 1080 pixels for a square social post, 1080 by 1920 for a story or Reel, and 1600 by 900 for an in-feed image on X. Keep text at least 40 pixels tall and leave 5 % clear at each edge for cropping.

Is it legal to use meme templates?

Most templates are copyrighted stills, so strictly the copyright belongs to the original creator. Personal and commentary use is very low risk and has some protection through fair use in the US and fair dealing under Section 52 of the Indian Copyright Act. Commercial use — advertising, merchandise, a company page — is genuine infringement and is enforced.

Can I use a meme in an advertisement?

Not safely. Commercial use of a copyrighted still is the case rights holders actually pursue, and fair dealing in India does not cover advertising. Use your own photograph or a properly licensed image instead.

Should I export a meme as PNG or JPEG?

PNG for text-heavy memes, because it keeps letter edges perfectly sharp. JPEG at quality 85 to 90 for photographic memes where file size matters more than a slight halo around the text.

Everything on this page runs in your browser — nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any image?
Yes! Upload any image from your device (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP). The image is processed locally and never sent to any server. Make sure you have the rights to use the image.
What is the output resolution?
The meme is generated at the original image resolution (up to 800px width). This provides good quality for sharing on social media platforms.
Can I change the font?
Currently, the tool uses Impact font which is the classic meme font. You can customize the size, color, and stroke to achieve different looks.
