Naming a baby in India: the practical and legal side

A birth must be registered within 21 days in India under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969, and the name can be added later without penalty — registration and naming are separate steps, which is why the ceremony can wait for the eleventh or twelfth day without risking a late fee.

Registration timeline and what it costs to be late

When you registerRequirement
Within 21 daysFree, at the local registrar or hospital
22 days to 30 daysLate fee, registrar’s permission
31 days to 1 yearWritten permission of the prescribed authority, plus an affidavit
After 1 yearOrder of a first-class magistrate or presidency magistrate
Adding the name laterPermitted within 12 months free of charge, and up to 15 years with a fee

The naming ceremony

Namkaran or Namakarana is one of the sixteen traditional samskaras. It is most commonly held on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, though regional practice varies widely — some communities hold it on the sixth day, others in the third or fourth month. Among Sikhs the name is chosen at the gurdwara by taking a hukamnama: the Guru Granth Sahib is opened at random and the child’s name begins with the first letter of the first word on that page, followed by Singh or Kaur. Muslim families traditionally perform Aqiqah on the seventh day, when the name is announced. Christian families name at baptism.

Practical checks worth doing before you commit

  1. Say the full name aloud, with the surname. Awkward elisions and unfortunate initials only reveal themselves out loud.
  2. Write the initials. Three-letter combinations that spell something are a lifetime of school jokes.
  3. Check the spelling you will actually register. This is the one that goes on the Aadhaar, the passport, the board certificates and every degree. Changing it later means a gazette notification, newspaper advertisements and an affidavit.
  4. Test it in both scripts if the child will use Devanagari or a regional script alongside Latin. Some transliterations are ambiguous or unflattering.
  5. Check how it shortens. Every name acquires a nickname; better to know which one.
  6. Check it in the languages the family speaks — and in English, if the child may study or work abroad. A name that is hard to pronounce is manageable; one that means something unfortunate is not.
  7. Search it. A namesake with a strong online presence is worth knowing about in advance.

More questions people ask

How long do I have to register a birth in India?

21 days, under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969, and registration in that window is free. Beyond 21 days a late fee and the registrar’s permission apply, and after a year it requires a magistrate’s order.

Can I register a birth before choosing a name?

Yes. Registration and naming are separate. The name can be added to the birth record within 12 months free of charge, and up to 15 years with a fee, which is why the naming ceremony can wait without risking a penalty.

When is the Indian naming ceremony held?

Namkaran is most often on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, though regional practice ranges from the sixth day to the third or fourth month. Sikh families take a hukamnama at the gurdwara, and Muslim families traditionally name at Aqiqah on the seventh day.

How hard is it to change a name in India later?

It takes an affidavit, advertisements in one English and one regional newspaper, and a gazette notification, after which every document — Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank, school records — must be updated separately. This is why the spelling you register is worth getting right first time.

What is nakshatra-based naming?

Choosing the first syllable of the name from the lunar mansion the moon occupied at birth. There are 27 nakshatras of four padas each, giving 108 syllables, and it is the reason many families wait for the birth chart before finalising a name.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the numerology number calculated?
We use a simplified numerology system where each letter is assigned a value (A=1, B=2, etc.), and the values are summed and reduced to a single digit. This is a common method used in Indian numerology traditions.
Can I suggest a name to add?
