GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing total grade points earned by total credit hours. Each course's grade points = grade value x credits.

GPA is a credit-weighted mean, not a plain average of your grades. Multiply each course’s grade point by its credit value, add those products, then divide by the total credits attempted:
Semester GPA for four courses
Maths — 4 credits × 9 = 36
Physics — 4 credits × 8 = 32
Programming — 3 credits × 10 = 30
English — 2 credits × 7 = 14
Total grade points = 112, total credits = 13
SGPA = 112 ÷ 13 = 8.62
SGPA is one semester. CGPA is every semester so far, again weighted by credits — not the average of your SGPAs unless every semester carried identical credits. Add all grade points earned across all semesters and divide by all credits attempted.
For CBSE, multiply the CGPA by 9.5 — a 9.4 CGPA is 89.3 %. Many universities publish their own multiplier or a subtractive formula such as (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so check your institution’s conversion notice before quoting a number.
On the 4.0 scale, 3.5 and above is generally considered strong and 3.0 is the common minimum for graduate admission. On the Indian 10-point scale, 8.0 and above is strong and most campus placement filters sit at 6.0 to 7.0.
Only if every semester carried the same number of credits. Properly, CGPA is total grade points across all semesters divided by total credits attempted, so a heavy semester pulls the number more than a light one.
It depends on the institution. Most Indian universities replace the failed grade with the passing grade on the transcript but keep the attempt count; most US schools keep both attempts in the GPA unless a formal grade-replacement policy applies. Read your academic regulations, not a general rule.
A weighted GPA gives extra grade points for harder courses — for example an A in an AP or IB subject counting 5.0 instead of 4.0 — so weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0. An unweighted GPA treats every course identically and is capped at 4.0.
