How many zeros are there in 1 crore?
The Indian system groups digits in twos after the first thousand, the international system in threes. That single difference is the whole source of the confusion.
1 crore has seven zeros: 10,000,000. Written in the Indian style it is 1,00,00,000 — the commas fall differently, but the number of zeros is the same. For comparison, 1 lakh has five zeros (1,00,000) and 1 arab has nine (1,00,00,00,000). One crore equals ten million, and one hundred crore equals one billion.

Five. 1 lakh is 100,000, written 1,00,000 in the Indian style. A hundred lakh make a crore, so 100 x 100,000 = 10,000,000, which is where the seventh zero comes from.
Is 1 crore equal to 10 million?
Yes, exactly. 1 crore = 10,000,000 = 10 million. Going the other way, 1 million = 10 lakh. The two systems agree on every value, they just break the digits into different groups: the international system uses thousand-million-billion, the Indian one uses thousand-lakh-crore.
How many crore in 1 billion?
One hundred. 1 billion = 1,000,000,000 = 100 crore = 10,000 lakh. This is the conversion that trips up news reports of company valuations: a "billion-dollar" company is a hundred-crore-dollar company, not a ten-crore one.
Why does the Indian system put commas in different places?
After the first group of three digits, the Indian system groups in twos rather than threes, because its named units step up by a factor of 100 (lakh, crore, arab, kharab) rather than 1,000 (thousand, million, billion). So ten million is written 1,00,00,000 in India and 10,000,000 elsewhere. Both are the same quantity.
