What Is a PNR Number?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique 10-digit number assigned to every railway ticket booked through Indian Railways (IRCTC). The PNR number is your ticket's identity -- it contains all information about your journey including train number, date, class, passenger details, and booking status.

Where to find your PNR:

PNR number structure: The first 3 digits indicate the booking zone (e.g., 4xx = Northern Railway, 6xx = Southern Railway, 8xx = Western Railway). The remaining 7 digits are a unique identifier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a PNR number valid?

What happens if my waitlisted ticket is not confirmed?
If your WL ticket is not confirmed before chart preparation (usually 4 hours before departure), it gets automatically cancelled and a refund is processed to your original payment method within 5-7 business days.
Can I travel on RAC ticket?
Yes! RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) passengers are allowed to board the train. You will be allotted a side-lower berth to share with another RAC passenger. RAC often gets confirmed to a full berth during the journey.
How to book IRCTC tickets for the first time?
Visit irctc.co.in, click "Register", fill in your details with valid ID, verify email and mobile, then log in to book. You need an Indian mobile number. For first-time users, there may be a small verification fee of INR 1.
