Check Aadhaar Enrollment Status

If you have recently applied for Aadhaar and want to check if it has been generated:

Go to resident.uidai.gov.in (official UIDAI portal)

Click on "Check Aadhaar Status" under the Aadhaar Services menu

Enter your 14-digit Enrollment ID (EID) from your enrollment slip, along with date and time of enrollment

Enter the security code (CAPTCHA) and click "Check Status"

Your Aadhaar generation status will be displayed. If generated, you can download the e-Aadhaar.

How to Download e-Aadhaar

Visit eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in

Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) or 28-digit EID

Enter the CAPTCHA and click "Send OTP" -- an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number

Enter the OTP and click "Download Aadhaar"

A password-protected PDF will download. The password is the first 4 letters of your name (CAPS) + birth year (e.g., PRIY1995)

How to Update Aadhaar Details

You can update your Aadhaar details either online (for address only) or by visiting an enrollment center (for name, DOB, gender, and other details).

Online Address Update (Self-Service):

Go to ssup.uidai.gov.in
Enter your Aadhaar number and CAPTCHA
Verify via OTP sent to registered mobile
Select "Address" and enter new address
Upload a valid address proof document (passport, utility bill, bank statement, etc.)
Pay the fee of INR 50 online
You will receive an Update Request Number (URN) -- use this to track status

At Enrollment Center:

Visit appointments.uidai.gov.in to book an appointment
Carry original documents for proof (identity + address)
Fee: INR 50 for demographic update, INR 100 for biometric update
Processing time: 7-90 days depending on the type of update

Linking Aadhaar with PAN

Linking Aadhaar with PAN is mandatory as per Income Tax Act. Here is how to do it:

Go to eportal.incometax.gov.in (Income Tax e-filing portal)
Click on "Link Aadhaar" in the Quick Links section
Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and name as per Aadhaar
If details match, click "Link Aadhaar" and pay the fee (INR 1,000 as of 2026)
Verify via OTP sent to Aadhaar-registered mobile
You will receive confirmation. Check status after 2-3 days.

Penalty for not linking: Your PAN becomes inoperative. You cannot file income tax returns, open new bank accounts, or do high-value financial transactions. The linking fee was increased from INR 500 to INR 1,000 for late linkers.

Common Aadhaar Issues & Solutions

Mobile number not registered: Visit an Aadhaar enrollment center with your Aadhaar and a valid ID to update your mobile number. This cannot be done online without an existing registered number.
Name mismatch with PAN/bank: Update either your Aadhaar name or PAN/bank records to match. For Aadhaar, visit an enrollment center with proof documents.
OTP not received: Ensure your registered mobile is active and has signal. Try again after 30 seconds. If the number is changed, you must visit a center to update it.
Biometric authentication failing: This can happen due to worn fingerprints (common in manual laborers). Use Iris authentication or visit a center for biometric update.
Aadhaar card lost: You can download e-Aadhaar anytime from the UIDAI portal. For a physical PVC card, order from resident.uidai.gov.in for INR 50.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aadhaar mandatory in India?

Aadhaar is mandatory for filing income tax returns, receiving government subsidies (LPG, rations), and linking with PAN. The Supreme Court ruled it is not mandatory for bank accounts and SIM cards, but most services still request it.

How long does Aadhaar generation take?

After enrollment, Aadhaar is typically generated within 15-90 days. In most cases, it takes 2-3 weeks. You can check the status using your Enrollment ID on the UIDAI website.

Can NRIs get Aadhaar?

Yes, NRIs with an Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar. They need to visit an enrollment center in India with their passport. There is no waiting period for NRIs anymore (previously 182 days).

Is it safe to share my Aadhaar number?

Avoid sharing your Aadhaar number unnecessarily. Use the Virtual ID (VID) instead wherever possible. Lock your biometrics when not in use. Never share the OTP received on your registered mobile with anyone.
