Live countdown to the Festival of Lights 2026
Diwali (also spelled Deepavali, meaning "row of lights") is one of the most significant festivals in South Asian culture. Celebrated by over 1 billion people worldwide — primarily Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists — Diwali marks the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The festival typically spans five days and is celebrated with oil lamps (diyas), candles, fireworks, rangoli art, feasts, sweets, and prayer.
In Hinduism, Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. In Jainism, it marks Lord Mahavira's attainment of nirvana. Sikhs celebrate it as Bandi Chhor Divas, honoring Guru Hargobind's release from imprisonment.
The festival begins with Dhanteras, when families clean their homes and buy gold, silver, or new utensils as a sign of good luck and prosperity. It honors Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda.
Also called "Small Diwali," this day celebrates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. People wake early, take oil baths, and begin decorating with diyas and rangoli.
The main day of the festival. Families light diyas and candles, perform Lakshmi Puja (prayer to the goddess of wealth), exchange gifts and sweets, and enjoy fireworks. Homes are decorated beautifully to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.
Celebrates Lord Krishna's lifting of Govardhan Mountain to protect villagers from rain. In many regions, this day also marks the first day of the new year in the Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar.
The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers' well-being, and brothers give gifts in return.
While Diwali originates in South Asia, it is now celebrated globally. Major celebrations take place in the UK (Leicester hosts Europe's largest Diwali celebration), the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, and many other countries. The White House has hosted Diwali celebrations since 2003, and many cities worldwide hold public Diwali events with fireworks, cultural performances, and food festivals.
