How many square feet is 1 gaj?

Unlike bigha, gaj is exact and the same everywhere in India. Here is the conversion and the plot sizes people actually search for.

1 gaj is exactly 9 square feet. A gaj (also written gaz or gajam) is the Indian name for a square yard, and a yard is exactly 3 feet, so one gaj is a 3 ft × 3 ft square. That makes a 100-gaj plot exactly 900 square feet and a 200-gaj plot exactly 1,800 square feet. The figure does not change by state.

Yes, exactly. Gaj, gaz and gajam are all regional names for the square yard, which is defined as 9 square feet. Because the yard has been fixed at 0.9144 metres worldwide since 1959, 1 gaj is also exactly 0.83612736 square metres. This is the one Indian land unit you never need to look up by state.

How many gaj is 1000 square feet?

Divide by 9: 1,000 sq ft is 111.11 gaj. Builders usually round this to 111 gaj. Working backwards, a plot advertised as 111 gaj is 999 sq ft, not 1,000, so a listing that says both is rounding one of the two.

How many gaj in a bigha?

A bigha in Uttar Pradesh or Haryana at 27,000 sq ft is 3,000 gaj. A 27,225 sq ft pucca bigha is exactly 3,025 gaj, which is where that odd-looking number comes from: 55 x 55. A 14,400 sq ft West Bengal bigha is 1,600 gaj.

Why do property ads in Delhi NCR quote gaj instead of square feet?

Plot sizes in the older colonies of Delhi, Gurugram and western Uttar Pradesh were laid out in yards, so 50-gaj, 100-gaj and 200-gaj plots are the standard grid there. Flats in the same cities are sold in square feet because the carpet-area rules under RERA are written in square metres and square feet. It is normal to see both units in the same listing.
