How many square feet is 1 bigha?
Bigha is the most-quoted and least-standardised land unit in India. The same word means four times as much land in Haryana as it does in Uttarakhand, so the only useful answer is a table.
There is no single national figure — 1 bigha is between 6,804 and 27,225 square feet depending on the state. The most common value, used across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Bihar, is about 27,000 sq ft (roughly 0.62 acre). In West Bengal and Assam a bigha is 14,400 sq ft, in Madhya Pradesh 12,000 sq ft, and in Uttarakhand just 6,804 sq ft.

Going the other way: acres and hectares into bigha
The three bigha sizes that cover most of north and east India.
| Plot | At 27,000 sq ft/bigha (UP, HR, RJ) | At 14,400 (WB, Assam) | At 12,000 (MP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 acre | 1.61 | 3.02 | 3.63 |
| 1 hectare | 3.99 | 7.47 | 8.97 |
| 5 acres | 8.07 | 15.12 | 18.15 |

The formula
bigha → square feet = bigha × (state conversion factor)
square feet → acre = square feet ÷ 43,560
square feet → square metre = square feet ÷ 10.7639
There is no algebra to get around the first line: the state factor has to be looked up. The other two are fixed worldwide.

Frequently asked
How many bigha make an acre?
It depends on the state, because the bigha does. Where a bigha is 27,000 sq ft (Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan pucca) an acre is about 1.61 bigha. Where a bigha is 14,400 sq ft (West Bengal, Assam) an acre is about 3.03 bigha. In Uttarakhand, at 6,804 sq ft, an acre is about 6.4 bigha.
Why does the bigha differ from state to state?
The bigha predates the metric system and was never brought under the Standards of Weights and Measures Act. Each princely state and later each revenue administration kept its own rod length, and those local rods survived into the modern land records. That is also why Rajasthan has two bighas in active use, the pucca bigha of 27,225 sq ft and the kachha bigha of 17,424 sq ft, exactly three-fifths of it.
What is a pucca bigha and a kachha bigha?
A pucca (or pakka) bigha is the larger, official measure used in revenue records - 27,225 sq ft, which is 3,025 square yards. A kachha bigha is a smaller local measure, most often one third of a pucca bigha in Uttar Pradesh (9,075 sq ft) or three-fifths of it in Rajasthan (17,424 sq ft). When a seller quotes a price per bigha, ask which one they mean before you compare it with anything.
How many square metres is 1 bigha?
Divide the square-foot figure by 10.7639. A 27,000 sq ft bigha is about 2,508 square metres; a 14,400 sq ft West Bengal bigha is about 1,338 square metres; a 6,804 sq ft Uttarakhand bigha is about 632 square metres. Registration documents are increasingly written in square metres even where the price is negotiated in bigha.
